This exquisite sculpture located in the Vatican Museum, is the allegorical representation of the Nile as an old man lying in the muddy bank of the river in Alexandria probably originated in Alexandria in the third century, BC, from where it spread throughout the Roman world. The Nile leaning against a sphinx is holding a cornucopia full of fruit and a bundle of wheat which categorize him as a benevolent god to whom the fertility of Egypt is entrusted.
